The Commission consists of 50 members who
represent corporations, state agencies, consulting firms and
other organizations with vested interest and expertise in the
state’s transportation infrastructure
system. Four committees, each with their own area of focus, research
potential solutions to infrastructure issues as well as projects
for improvement and capital investment.
- Freight Shipments & Logistical Needs-chaired by Dwight
Jennings of Southern Shipping & Logistics- evaluates the
shipment of raw materials, component parts and finished products
by both existing and prospective new industries.
- Non-Freight Movement & Transportation
Needs-chaired by State Rep. Cam Ward-deals with the challenges
facing the traveling public in terms of public safety, convenience
and commuting issues as well as the economic impact of transportation
on the community.
- Economic Development-chaired by Linda Swann of the Alabama
Development Office- identifies and evaluates the economic development
opportunities available through improved infrastructure systems
and the consequences of continued deterioration and a failure
to improve intermodal coordination.
- Maintenance & Upkeep of Infrastructure Assets- chaired
by Franky Griggs of Nucor Steel- evaluates critical repair and
maintenance needs facing various elements of Alabama’s
infrastructure system.
Also, a fifth committee chaired by Dr. Bill
Killingsworth of the University of Alabama at Huntsville provided
research, data and other technical support necessary for the
four working committees and the Commission to evaluate the state’s
infrastructure needs and to propose solutions. These four committees
presented their findings to the Commission who then created the
final recommendations, which are included in the link below.
Many Manufacture Alabama members served on the Commission as
well as its four committees. Specifically, Tommy Johnson of Frontier
Yarns is chairman the Commission on Infrastructure Chair, and
Franky Griggs of Nucor Steel is the chairman of the Maintenance
Committee. Please see the link below to view all commission and
committee members. We are grateful to all of the commission and
committee members who contributed to this worthwhile initiative.
An efficient transportation infrastructure system is an essential
element of competitive success for manufacturers. The recommendations
of the Commission will provide that system and continue to make
Alabama a top state for successful manufacturing industries.
